Hezekiah University, the first private university in Imo State, marked a historic milestone with its Maiden Convocation on Friday, 7th and Saturday, 8th March 2025. The two-day event took place at the university’s serene and picturesque campus in Ishiala Umudi, Nkwerre Local Government Area, and was attended by distinguished dignitaries, including the Executive Governor of Imo State, His Excellency Senator Hope Uzodimma, and the First Lady of Imo State, Barr. The event also featured the commissioning of new projects, including two ultra-modern student hostels and the magnificent Law Faculty Building. The convocation ceremony culminated on Saturday, 8th March 2025, with the award of first degrees and the conferment of honorary degrees. One of the highlights of the ceremony was the honorary Doctor of Public Administration (Honoris Causa) awarded to Barr. Chioma Uzodimma, the First Lady of Imo State, in recognition of her contributions to public service and education.

Governor Hope Uzodimma, who was in attendance, commended the vision of the university’s founder, Most Reverend Professor Daddy Hezekiah, and announced an initial donation of N250 million to support the university’s future growth. He also expressed his commitment to transforming the education sector in Imo State through various reforms and policy changes, including fostering a stronger partnership between public and private educational institutions.
In his remarks, the Governor acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to improve Nigeria’s education system through initiatives such as the Students’ Loan Programme and increased funding for education at all levels. Governor Uzodimma also commended the quality of education at Hezekiah University, emphasizing the state’s continued collaboration with the institution.
The university’s Proprietor and Chancellor, Most Reverend Professor Daddy Hezekiah, expressed gratitude to the Governor for his support and emphasized the importance of government funding for private universities to remain competitive with public institutions. He also appealed for federal government interventions, such as grants and funding, to support the growth of private universities across Nigeria.
