Project Description
Philosophy
The Philosophy of the Programme is to encourage and promote the training of students in all aspects of Plant Science and Biotechnology. The students, at the end of their programme are expected to become conscious of their environment and appreciate the delicate balance between plant life and the existence of the Earth. They are also expected to become highly knowledgeable in the new frontiers of biotechnology as it relates to plants, the primary producers in the universe. Most importantly, it is the core goal of the department to produce graduates who can relate to the needs of the society through their knowledge and application of the amazing facts of plant life and products, and biotechnology.
Build Your Future With Hezekiah Education
- VISION – To produce scientific experts provided with both theoretical understanding and practical training in the field of Biotechnology and then the contribution of these cadres to work in both official and non-official agricultural, industrial, and health institutions.
- MISSION – To produce specialized graduates in the fields of Biotechnology and provide them with updated information in the various fields of the contementary life such as plant biotechnology in order to get a full benefit of the plant products, genetically engineered living organisms, medical biotechnology, production of pharmaceutical compounds, environmental reclamation in order to get rid of air, soil, and water pollutants, and to use the genetically engineered microorganisms for the production of materials with biological values.
- AIM & OBJECTIVE – The objective of the course is to give students new knowledge and widening of the knowledge acquired in other course by handling of classical and modern plant biotechnology processes, including breeding of healthy plants, plants with improved characteristics and plants for biomolecule production.
- Career Placement – In particular, the graduates of the Plant Science programmes in the College of Natural Sciences can work in the following institutions:
Nigeria National Bureau of Standards (UNBS)
Nigeria Industrial Research Institute
Agricultural Research Institutes
Pharmaceutical Industries
Sugar Industries
Tea Estates and Industries
National Bureau of Statistics

Admission Requirements
Candidates are admitted into the degree programme in any of the following three ways:
- The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)
- Direct Entry
- Inter-University Transfer
A. UTME Entry Mode
Candidates must obtain credit passes in five (5) subjects in WAEC, NECO and GCE, which must include English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. In addition, an acceptable pass in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in relevant subject combinations is required for admission into 100 level. Expected duration for UTME candidates shall be 4 years.
B. Direct Entry (DE): 3-Year Degree Programme
Expected duration for Direct Entry (DE) candidates with at least two ‘A’ level passes at the GCE/JUPEB/IJMB in relevant science subjects shall be 3 years.
C. Inter-University Transfer Mode
Students can transfer provided they met the receiving University’s requirements in terms of qualification, grade and the minimum duration of stay to earn the university’s degree.
